Many children with autism spectrum disorders are not able to thrive in a typical summer camp due to their unique sensory and behavioral needs. Yet, like all other kids, they love the camp experience. This book presents in clear and detailed terms what it takes to put on a camp that takes into consideration the special needs of children on the autism spectrum. This book offers advice, suggestions, guidelines, and steps for establishing a summer camp for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The introductory section provides an overview of the special needs that need to be taken into account for a camp for children with ASD. These issues are visited in more detail throughout the remaining chapters. The book is organized into 4 main chapters: (1) creating a camp plan; (2) preparation for camp; (3) the camp experience; and (5) closing of camp. The book contains sample forms, timelines, picture supports, and schedules. Situational examples are used to illustrate the various interactions counselors and/or peer models need to take into consideration. The appendices also offer suggested activities, materials, and other useful resources.
