This kit focuses on building sound symbol correspondences using manipulatives such as place holder chips with magnet wands to build words containing short and long vowels. This kit could be enhanced when paired with sound spelling cards, vowel team letter tiles or vowel team Unifix Cubes (not included in this kit), individual letter tiles (not included in this kit), alphabet arcs or vowel valley activities and materials. Educators begin by showing an object or image that represents a word containing a vowel sound. Students can then tap the sounds within the words, map the sounds onto word mats or Elkonin boxes with non-letter placeholders and finally build the words by replacing magnet chips, cards, felts, blocks or other sound placeholders with letters. Letter cards, objects, and blocks can also be used as communication tools for learners who use direct selection, switches, or eye gaze to communicate their choices.
