Starting in fourth grade students will be studying Ohio’s role in the anti-slavery movement as part of social studies instruction. This text set provides both true accounts and historical fiction as a window into this very important time in history. The study of the history of slavery expands in 7th and 8th grades to investigate the geography and people connected to early slave trade. With slavery came diversity of knowledge, skills, cultures, and traditions to America. As students transition into high school government coursework, the US Constitution and amendments also connect back to anti-slavery laws and our overall rights and responsibilities to ensure that they are upheld.
