National and international research indicates 1 in 100 children (approx.) is diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These figures strongly suggest that a number of children currently accessing Early Learning and Care Centres (ECS) have already been diagnosed with ASD. Furthermore, there may be children in the ECS environment who might meet the diagnostic criteria for ASD but have not been recognized. Early identification and intervention is critical for children with ASD, to maximize their outcomes for learning. In light of these statistics, we have developed an easy to read publication to support management and educators working across early education settings. Information throughout this publication will assist educators to recognize the early indicators of ASD. Increased awareness enables educators to assist the family and guide them to the appropriate diagnostic pathways. In addition, the reader will be equipped with the tools and strategies to maximize participation and inclusion for the child with ASD and their family early education settings. An ECS environment often provides the carers with the first opportunity to transition their child from the home to a learning environment. It is essential that we create positive first experiences for children with ASD. Planned and prepared transitions into the early education environment is critical to successful placement. This publication provides a framework for supporting the child with ASD and their family throughout their ECS journey, starting from enrollment. With the right plan, a supportive approach and the sincere desire to care for and teach the child with ASD, they can grow, learn and thrive.
